At Cumberland Academy of Georgia, an autism school in Atlanta, cutting-edge assistive technology is playing a pivotal role in transforming the educational experience for neurodiverse learners. With a thoughtful blend of technology and personalized instruction, Cumberland helps students from 3rd grade through high school and beyond to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

A School Designed for Every Learner

Since its founding in 2007 by Debbi and Matthew Scarborough, Cumberland Academy has been rooted in the belief that neurodiverse students, those with ASD, ADD, ADHD, and other learning differences, deserve a learning environment tailored to their unique strengths. What began as a solution for their son, Steven, has grown into a fully accredited autism spectrum school with a focus on academics, social skills, and life readiness.

Serving students in grades 3 to12, including a post-graduate program and College at Cumberland, the school’s approach balances rigorous college-prep with essential life skill development

How Assistive Technology Supports Learning

Personalized Learning & Small Class Sizes

With an average class size of just eight students and a student-teacher ratio of around 6:1, Cumberland ensures students receive tailored instruction. When combined with assistive technology, this one-on-one style environment supports differentiated learning and allows each student to progress at a comfortable pace.

A Sensory-Friendly Setting for Tech-Supported Learning

Recognizing that traditional classrooms may be overstimulating, Cumberland creates sensory-friendly environments with quiet zones, adaptive seating, and calming lighting to reduce distractions. Integrating technology tools in such a supportive setting helps students stay focused, confident, and engaged.

Inclusive Tech in Daily Curriculum

Assistive technology is woven throughout daily learning. Cumberland employs tools that support visual, auditory, and tactile learners, enabling students to access content in ways that suit their strengths. Whether through adaptive software, communication devices, or interactive learning platforms, these tools empower students to engage fully in their education

Beyond Tools: Comprehensive Support

Trained Educators Using Evidence-Based Strategies

Technology is only as effective as the educators utilizing it. Cumberland’s teachers receive intensive training in autism education, evidence-based teaching methods, and behavioral support techniques.  This professional expertise, paired with assistive tools, fosters students’ independence and academic confidence.

Life Skills and College & Career Readiness

Teaching extends well beyond textbooks. Cumberland merges technology-driven instruction with practical training like workshops, cooking classes, career prep, and life skills development, ensuring students navigate both school and adulthood with poise

A Connected and Supportive Community

Assistive tools aren’t just for students; they also help families stay engaged. Cumberland fosters a warm, communicative environment where parents, teachers, and students align on goals. This collaborative spirit assures families that technology is used thoughtfully to support, not define, their child’s learning journey.

Why Cumberland Stands Out as an Autism School in Atlanta

If you’re seeking an autism spectrum school in Atlanta where assistive technology isn’t merely a buzzword but an integral part of learning, Cumberland stands apart:

  • Accredited & trusted: With accreditation through Cognia/GISA & GAC, and 100% college acceptance for graduates, the academic standard is high
  • Individual-focused instruction: Small class sizes ensure each student’s learning style and needs are met.
  • Holistic development: Academics, social-emotional skill building, life skills, sports, clubs, and technology all combine to create well-rounded learning.
  • Robust support system: From expert educators to an inclusive community culture, families find the support they need.
