Cumberland Academy of Georgia was the first special needs private school in Georgia to adopt Chromebooks and Google Workspace for Schools (formerly Google Apps for Education) for each student. Since then we have adopted a Universal Design for Learning model in which all students are offered assistive technology as part of our school culture. We offer Assistive Technology to all students as part of our commitment to Universal Design for Learning. Students are offered a variety of Text to Speech, Speech to Text, and predictive keyboard tools to assist with learning. We evaluate students for interventions using uPAR and the DeCoste Writing Protocol. The results of these are included in each student’s Student Learning Profile and updated annually. We believe in the normalizing of assistive technology for all students and that technology is a powerful tool for learning.
